Some
search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for
evidence in crime, and find people in the water.
Cloudy
days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search.
Dogs
navigate in brush better than humans.
Depending
on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!
Dogs
can be trained to ride in anything from helicopters, trucks, and boats, to sling
harnesses and chair lifts.
A
much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours.
We
all give off cells, gasses, and vapors. These cells and odors act like smoke. So
dogs, who have 44 times the sniffing power of humans, can pick up the scent and
follow it.
The
average dog has 42 permanent teeth.
The
eight heaviest breeds of dog are: St Bernard, English Mastiff,
Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Tibetan Mastiff, Newfoundland,
Neopolitan Matiff, and the Anatolian Karabash
The
strongest breeds of dogs are those which were orginally used as draught dogs -
that is to pull sleds or carts. They all have heavy bone and cobby bodies. They
include the Bernese Mountain Dog, Bouvier, Rottweiler and Alaskan Malamute.
Since 1911 the use of dogs to pull carts on public highways has been banned.
Typically,
the major carer of the pet is female, married with children, living in the
suburbs and most likely employed.
A
dog's hearing is one of the best developed senses. Dogs can hear sounds too
faint for us to detect and can also hear noises pitched at a much higher
frequency. Because their hearing is so sensitive, dogs rely heavily on it to
alert to their surroundings.
REVERSE
SNEEZING is an uncommon condition that sounds as though the dog has something
caught in the air passages. Believed to be due to a temporary spasm of the
throat muscles.
HOT
WEATHER HAZARDS! During summer months, we like to take our dogs on trips
with us. Even when outside temperatures are in the 70's, a car can rapidly
climb to over 100 degrees. Dogs do not perspire under all of that fur,
they cool their bodies by taking in cooler air when panting. You can lose
your dog to heatstroke in a very short span of time.
